Eyelid rejuvenation surgery consultation with Dr Massry

Dr. Massry consults with several new patients every day in the office about eyelid rejuvenation procedures. Below is a list of the top 10 questions he hears from patients during their consultations.

1. Am I a good candidate for cosmetic surgery?

Dr. Massry will evaluate every patient on an individualized basis to determine if they are a good candidate for cosmetic surgery. Every patient has a unique anatomy and their own personal reasons for seeking out plastic surgery. During your consultation Dr. Massry will examine you and ask you what your goals are for your eyelid surgery. By the end of your consultation Dr. Massry will be able to tell you if you are a good candidate for surgery.

In general, you must have the following to be a good candidate for surgery:

  • You are motivated to have surgery
  • You can set aside the time for healing
  • You have no significant health issues
  • You have realistic expectations

2. At what age can I consider eyelid rejuvenation surgery?

This all depends on the procedure performed. But Dr. Massry likes to think more in terms of need for surgery and less in terms of a specific age. Everyone is unique and sees the signs of aging at different ages. So to say every 50 year old woman needs eyelid surgery, would be very incorrect. Most cosmetic eyelid procedures are not typically done until the patient is in their mid-thirties. However, patients may start with Botox and fillers in their 20s. Again, Dr. Massry will evaluate your need for eyelid rejuvenation during a consultation to determine if you are ready for surgery.

3. Can surgery be covered by insurance?

Every case and every insurance provider is unique. In some cases, eyelid surgery may be covered in those instances when the upper lids are heavy enough to reduce vision. In addition, some lid surgeries are reconstructive in nature and will be covered. Dr. Massry can provide you more information on this during your consultation so you can make an informed decision.

4. Is surgery painful?

Most patients tell us they are surprised with how minimal the pain is following surgery. It is unusual to have more than mild to moderate discomfort after surgery. If Dr. Massry feels there may be some pain after surgery, a pain medication will be prescribed.

5. How long is a typical recovery period?

In the majority of cases visible bruising and swelling after eyelid surgery will last 2-4 weeks. Normal physical activity can resume after 2 weeks. In some surgeries, like an upper blepharoplasty, people may return to work within a few days but will still have bruising and swelling. In most eyelid surgeries, taking a week off from work is reasonable. Dr. Massry will be able to elaborate on this during your consultation.

6. Is eyelid surgery performed in a hospital or surgery center?

Almost all cosmetic eyelid surgery is performed in an outpatient surgery center. There are many benefits to having your surgery at an outpatients surgery facility vs a hospital, including it is more cost efficient. On instances when overnight stay is necessary (ie. age or health issues) a hospital surgery is recommended.

7. What is the difference between cosmetic and reconstructive eyelid surgery?

A cosmetic eyelid procedure is done for appearance only, while a reconstructive eyelid or orbital surgery has a component of medical necessity. Insurance companies will pay, at least in part, for reconstructive surgeries. However, when performing reconstructive surgeries, Dr. Massry takes an aesthetic approach so that his patients look their best, in addition to restoring function.

8. Can I finance my surgery?

Yes, there are financing programs and Dr. Massry’s staff can discuss this with you during your consultation.

9. Does surgery leave unsightly scars?

When performed by an expert oculoplastic surgeon, you should not have visible scars. In most procedures, incisions are in hidden areas (creases, skin folds, etc.) so they are not noticeable. On rare occasion a scar may still develop. In these instances, oral and/or injectable medications, and sometimes minor surgical revisions may be needed.

10. How long will my results last?

Surgery improves appearance and restores a more youthful look. However, it does not stop the aging process. Depending on the procedure, the results of surgery will typically last 10 – 20 years.
